As a mucolytic in respiratory disorder associated with the production of viscous mucus such as acute and chronic bronchitis. In alveolar protenosis to remove proteinaceous material by repeated lavage with heparin and acetylcysteine which may prolong survival up to 5 years. During mechanical ventilation in premature infants to relive severe recurrent atelectasis. In adult respiratory syndrome acetylcysteine is given intravenously.
Nebulisation : (Face mask, mouth piece, tracheostomy) 3-5ml of a 20% solution 3-4 times daily. Orally : 200mg three times daily. Children up to 2 years may be given 200mg once daily and those between 2-6 years 200mg twice daily.
